Background of the study
Celebrity culture has become a pervasive influence on youth, shaping perceptions, aspirations, and values through media exposure and public figures. In Lagos State, the proliferation of celebrity narratives in television, social media, and music has a significant impact on the attitudes and behaviors of young people. Celebrities, as cultural icons, often serve as role models, influencing trends in fashion, language, and lifestyle (Chukwu, 2023). This influence can be both positive and negative; while it may inspire creativity and ambition, it can also propagate unrealistic ideals and consumerist values. Youth are particularly vulnerable to the pressures of celebrity culture, which can affect their self-esteem, educational goals, and social behavior. Despite widespread interest in celebrity influence, there remains a need to critically evaluate how this culture shapes youth values and the long-term implications for social development. This study investigates the multifaceted impact of celebrity culture on youth values in Lagos State, exploring the interplay between media representations, social identity, and behavioral outcomes (Adebola, 2024).
Statement of the problem
While celebrity culture in Lagos State is celebrated for its glamour and aspirational qualities, it has also raised concerns regarding its impact on youth values. Many young people adopt lifestyles and attitudes promoted by celebrities without critical reflection, leading to issues such as materialism, unrealistic expectations, and diminished academic focus. The pervasive nature of celebrity influence complicates efforts to promote balanced value systems among youth. This study seeks to address the gap in understanding the extent of celebrity culture’s influence on youth, and to identify strategies to mitigate any adverse effects (Ibrahim, 2023).
Objectives of the Study
To evaluate the influence of celebrity culture on youth values in Lagos State.
To identify the positive and negative effects of celebrity influence on young people.
To recommend strategies for promoting balanced value systems among youth.
Research questions
How does celebrity culture influence youth values in Lagos State?
What are the primary positive and negative effects of celebrity influence on youth?
What measures can mitigate adverse impacts and promote healthy value formation?
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides insights into the impact of celebrity culture on youth values, offering guidance for educators, policymakers, and parents in Lagos State. The findings will help develop interventions that encourage critical media literacy and balanced value systems among young people (Chukwu, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to the influence of celebrity culture on youth values in Lagos State. It focuses solely on media-driven cultural impacts and does not extend to other factors affecting youth behavior. Limitations include self-reported data and variability in media exposure among respondents.
